Soonish: Ten Emerging Technologies That'll Improve and/or Ruin Everything by Kelly and Zach Weinersmith

Ross A.'s Recommendation for the 510 Club | DecemBer 2024

Book cover of Soonish by Kelly and Zach Weinersmith.

"What will the world of tomorrow be like? How will technology change our lives? And why don't we have a lunar colony yet?" This book is a humorous exploration of emerging technologies that will improve and/or ruin everything.

Reading SOONish is like watching a stand-up comedian, with good humour and plenty of geeky references.

The mathematical content is not particularly explicit but quite important when the author attempts to numerically extrapolate various quantifiable effects of new and emerging technological ideas that do not yet exist.

The author of this book is more famous for his web comic "Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal".

"""
Note: the authors of Soonish, husband-and-wife duo Kelly and Zach Weinersmith, have also been hitting the news recently with their second co-written publication, A City On Mars. The book, which investigates the complexities, challenges and opportunities of humanity’s quest to settle in space, won the 2024 Royal Society Trivedi Science Book Prize.

WHAT IS THE 510 CLUB?

The 510 Club is named after the Dewey Decimal classification for Mathematics. It is a book recommendation project facilitated by Mathateca that is published in the monthly Christchurch MathsJam newsletter and on the Facebook page. Each month we feature a mathematical book recommendation, whether that’s a novel, articles / essays, a puzzle book, textbook, biography... just as long as it features maths in some way. Read the above book at your leisure then feel free to comment your thoughts below, or come along to the following Christchurch MathsJam sessions to join in an informal maths/book chat with the reviewer.

We're always looking for suggestions! If you're interested in contributing a book rec one month, please email christchurch@mathsjam.com to sign up.
