MATHEMATICAL ADVENT CALENDARS FOR 2024

Though there might be less chocolate in these offerings, there’s no shortage of fun to be had with recreational mathematical Advent Calendars. Here’s our hand-picked round-up for when you can squeeze in time around the holiday rush:

  • Check out the homepage of www.mscroggs.co.uk for this awesome yearly challenge. This year, after a major malfunction in his toy factory, Santa needs help figuring out the code to open a locked warehouse of emergency presents before Christmas eve!
Bonus: try solving Scrogg’s 2024 Christmas card, or send it to your friends.

  • Andy Maths YouTube channel has published an Agg-vent calendar (solving problems from geometry puzzle designer Catrionia Agg). You can view all of the puzzles today, but the solutions will be released daily. Over 28% better than standard advent calendars, Andy will be releasing a puzzle solution every day of December - that's 31 puzzles: https://andymath.com/agg-vent-calendar

  • The Plus Maths Calendar features interviews with mathematicians in a podcast episode per day from their Maths on the Move series: https://plus.maths.org/content/advent-calendar-2024

  • MATH+ Kalender, a collection of 24 mathematical brainteasers written by researchers and their colleagues from the Dutch initiative 4TU.AMI: https://www.mathekalender.de/wp/calendar

  • For the programming inclined among us, try the Advent of Code: https://adventofcode.com

For school students and their teachers

If we find more, perhaps we can start an advent calendar of advent calendars (and if we do, how many puzzles would you expect to be working on by Christmathstime?)
